2012年の夏、ふと立ち寄った本屋さんで刺し子の本に出会いました。
はじめに、手芸メーカーのキットを自己流でぬりえのように縫いましたが、布に点線で印刷されていた針目の大きさに違和感を持ちました。シンプルな並縫いの技法を用いるだけに、自分のリズムで刺してこそ自分らしい作品ができるのではないかと考えました。
学生時代は服飾・繊維・化学・生活歴史学・生活文化を専攻。「美意識を活かして価値を整える仕事」に就きたいと願いましたが、超就職氷河期により断念。
好きなことよりも得意なことを強みに自活したいという思いで「言葉で人間関係ややり取りを整える仕事」を軸に社会人生活をスタート。主に、BtoB向けのIT関連の教育・指導をプロのトレーナーとして従事。外資系製薬メーカーでは、経営戦略に基づいた教育プログラムの企画・設計、ティーチングやコーチング、データ分析を生業としていました。
幼少期から今日まで、手先の器用さを褒めていただく場面ば多くありましたので、刺し子そのものの技術はもちろんですが、レッスンという観点から言うと、「どうすれば人が理解し、継続できるか」を扱ってきた経験が、そのまま指導の質につながっていると思います。
感覚に頼りがちな技術を言語化・構造化し、再現可能な形で伝えることで、教室の外でも続けられる上達を支援し、生徒様ご自身が「どこが良くて、どこを改善すべきか」を判断でき、その過程を楽しんで、ご自身の上達を実感できる指導を行っています。上達という見えないプロセスを設計できることが私の講師としての強みであると考えています。
2019年、西荻窪ではじめた刺し子好きさんによる「刺し子愛好会」が発展し、刺し子教室を本格化。
自身主宰の西荻窪アトリエハコ教室の他、ヴォーグ学園・よみうりカルチャー・三越カルチャーサロンで講師を務めました。いずれも満席が続く人気クラスに成長。
対面レッスン以外に、サブスクオンラインレッスンの配信や、ファーストリテイリング（ユニクロ）の刺し子リペア事業ではデザイン監修やスタッフ指導を担当。
著書に『刺し子のきほん』（主婦の友社）ほか共著書多数。手芸誌にとどまらず、雑誌・書籍でも作品紹介が掲載されています。
刺し子は独学で始めたのち、現代刺し子の第一人者・吉田英子氏の娘である吉田久美子氏の指導を受け、基礎を大切にしながらも今なおアップデートし続けています。
Yukiko Ichiki
In the summer of 2012, I happened upon a book on sashiko at a bookstore—an encounter that marked the beginning of my journey.
I first tried stitching using a commercial kit, following the printed dotted lines like coloring within the lines. However, I soon felt a sense of discomfort with the uniform stitch size indicated on the fabric. Because sashiko is built on the simplicity of running stitches, I came to believe that true expression lies in stitching with one’s own rhythm, allowing each piece to reflect the individuality of its maker.
During my academic years, I studied fashion, textiles, chemistry, history of everyday life, and cultural studies. I aspired to pursue a career that would “refine value through aesthetic sensibility,” but due to the severe employment climate at the time, I chose a different path. Instead, I built my career around my strength in “structuring communication and relationships through language.”
As a professional trainer, I worked primarily in BtoB IT education, and later at a global pharmaceutical company, where I was engaged in designing and developing educational programs based on business strategy, as well as teaching, coaching, and data analysis.
Having been praised for my dexterity since childhood, I bring not only technical skill in sashiko, but also extensive experience in understanding how people learn and sustain progress. This directly informs the quality of my teaching.
By translating intuitive techniques into language and structure, I provide reproducible methods that support continued practice beyond the classroom. My teaching enables students to recognize their own strengths, identify areas for improvement, and enjoy the process of growth. I believe my greatest strength as an instructor lies in designing the invisible process of skill development.
In 2019, what began as a casual gathering of sashiko enthusiasts in Nishi-Ogikubo evolved into a full-fledged sashiko studio.
In addition to my own Atelier Haco studio, I have taught at Vogue Academy, Yomiuri Culture Center, and Mitsukoshi Culture Salon, where my classes have consistently reached full capacity.
Beyond in-person lessons, I offer subscription-based online courses. I have also contributed to the sashiko repair initiative by Fast Retailing (UNIQLO), where I supervised design and trained staff.
My publications include “The Basics of Sashiko” (Shufunotomo Co., Ltd.), along with several co-authored works. My creations have been featured not only in craft magazines but also in various books and publications.
After beginning sashiko as a self-taught practitioner, I later studied under Kumiko Yoshida, daughter of Eiko Yoshida, a leading figure in modern sashiko. While honoring traditional foundations, I continue to refine and evolve my practice.
